Joseph Kohlmaier wurde in Wien geboren und lebt in London und auf der Isle of Wight. Seine Arbeit ist vielschichtig und an den Schnittstellen verschiedener Disziplinen und Tätigkeiten angesiedelt, die sich zwischen individueller und kollektiver Praxis bewegen. Sie ist getragen von der Frage, wie wir lernen, wie Denken mit symbolischen Formen zusammenhängt, von der Prekarität und dem Potenzial kollektiver Handlungen, von der Ökologie des Chors als Methodik, sowie von marginalisierten Denkweisen, besonders der Rolle von Körperlichkeit und leiblich erfahrener Wahrnehmung (felt sense) in der Entstehung von Wissen.

Er ist seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren als Lehrer tätig und derzeit Associate Teaching Professor für Geschichte und Theorie an der School of Art, Architecture and Design der London Metropolitan University. Er ist Gründer und künstlerischer Leiter mehrerer Kollektive, Organisationen und Bildungsprojekte, darunter der experimentelle Chor Musarc (2009–heute), Field Studies (2010–17, 2025–heute), das Grafikdesignstudio Polimekanos (mit Stefan Kraus, 2000–2020), sowie der Verlags Cours de Poétique. Durch diese und vergleichbare Strukturen entwickelt sich Joseph Kohlmaiers Praxis und hat ihre größte Wirkung, indem sie Räume schafft, in denen Menschen mit neuen Ideen experimentieren. Als Kurator und Produzent hat Joseph Kohlmaier zahlreiche aufstrebende und etablierte Künstler:innen beauftragt und mit ihnen, sowie mit führenden Kulturinstitutionen im Vereinigten Königreich und in Europa, an Projekten zusammengearbeitet, die die Landschaft von Bildung, zeitgenössischer Musik und Performance nachhaltig verändert haben.

Projekte mit Musarc

Projekte mit Musarc wurden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Dirigenten des Ensembles – Cathy Heller Jones (2009–2021), David Young (2024–2025) und Oli Kitching (seit 2025) – sowie mit den Gastdirigenten Jack Sheen (2022–2023), Melanie Pappenheim (2014–2022) und Patricia Auchterlonie (2023) entwickelt. Visuelle Kommunication und Grafische Gestaltung

Joseph Kohlmaiers Tätigkeit im Bereich Visuelle Kommunikation und Grafische Gestaltung entwickelte sich nicht aus einer formalen akademischen Ausbildung oder Lehre, sondern aus einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit Forschung und Schreiben sowie der sozialen Dimension von Fotografie und Bildender Kunst.

Im Jahr 2000 gründete er gemeinsam mit Stefan Kraus das Grafikdesignstudio Polimekanos. Das Studio gestaltete sich als ein experimenteller Raum, in dem die konzeptionellen Ansätze und professionellen Praktiken der beiden Gründer konvergierten. Bis 2020 war Joseph Kohlmaier als Creative Director tätig. Polimekanos etablierte sich früh durch einen offenen, interdisziplinären Arbeitsansatz und arbeitete in der Folge mit führenden Kurator*innen, Organisationen und Institutionen des britischen Kultur- und öffentlichen Sektors zusammen, mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Kunst und Architektur. In Kohlmaiers künstlerischer und gestalterischer Praxis nimmt die Topografie von Information und Sprache eine zentrale Stellung ein. Im Fokus steht insbesondere die Frage, wie sich Ideen materialisieren und durch Montage, Assoziation und diskursive Verfahren weiterentwickeln — von alltäglichen Sprachhandlungen bis hin zu Code und Hypertext.

Joseph Kohlmaier ist weiterhin als Berater und Entwickler im Bereich Grafik und Visuelle Gestaltung tätig, besonders im Zusammenhang mit den Organisationen, die er als Kurator, Verleger und im Zuge seiner Lehrtätigkeit gegründet hat und weiterhin leitet.
